Introduction


Role within CERN:
The Modulators, Klystrons & High-Gradient Structures (MKS) section at CERN is essential for the advancement of particle accelerator technology. We design, install, operate, and optimise high power radio-frequency systems for the LHC, Linac4, and test facilities for future accelerators. Additionally, we develop electron beam acceleration systems for the CERN plasma wake field acceleration project (AWAKE), and we enhance the production, testing, and industry transfer of CERN’s X-band technology for high gradient accelerating structures.


Goals and Objectives:
Our objectives include driving forward R&D for the future circular collider through global collaboration, and providing a rich environment for training young scientists. We play a leading role in the European Training Network “PACMAN,” fostering the next generation of experts in particle accelerator technology.

What is MKS ?

At CERN, modulators klystrons and high gradient structures play an important part in the process of particle accelerators. Especially for the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

Modulators

  • Control the power supply to accelerators
  • They convert electrical power from the grid into high-voltage pulses that are used to drive the klystrons
  • Ensure synchronisation of RF pulse


Klystrons

  • Amplify RF signals
  • Controls the speed of steam of electrons
